Mud cloth and silver leaf on wood panel

25x25cm

Nesting Moon combines textile and gilding techniques within a multi-media composition mounted on a wooden panel. The work primarily consists of sewn quilt, constructed from fabric originally collected for its cultural significance, then affixed to the board. A patch of silver leaf was applied directly to the wood beneath the fabric, allowing the metallic surface to remain partially visible, creating a subtle, luminous form that evokes the moon.

The silver leaf introduces a reflective quality that responds to shifts in light and perspective. As the viewer moves around the work, the interplay of light and shadow across the silver surface can suggest the phases of the lunar cycle. The use of wood as a support is both practical and conceptual: it provides the necessary surface for gilding, which is mostly incompatible with fabric or canvas, and gives structural integrity to the quilt, allowing it to function as a wall-mounted piece.

By combining traditional textile practices with gilding and relief techniques, Nesting Moon bridges craft and fine art, drawing attention to materiality, process, and the visual impact of layered surfaces.
