Through the Blinds
Silver Leaf, steel nails, linen and wool thread on wood plank
40x25cm
Through the Blinds, features a surface entirely covered in silver leaf, mirroring the former piece Nesting Moon. Lining the edges of the piece are 56 silver nails, which function as an unconventional loom, holding the piece together. An abundance of linen and wool string is woven and stretched across the surface, intersecting at each nail. A mixture of cream and dark grey fibers complements the silver leaf, creating a monochromatic effect in the work.
This piece conceptually represents the moon in a partially visible view. The title Through the Blinds references the experience of gazing at the celestial body through a confining environment that restricts its light from fully reaching the eye. Clulow aimed to convey a similar energy in this piece, with the woven fibres acting as these restrictions.
The presence of silver leaf in Through the Blinds symbolizes the moon itself. The moon being one of life’s few constants, it is spiritually grounding and remains consistent within itself.
