After dusk and on and on

oil, acrylic molding clay, plaster, muskrat skull and teeth

29x40cm

After Dusk and On and On explores themes of decay, transformation, and the conclusion of natural cycles. The work incorporates a muskrat skull, a found object gifted to the artist by their first painting instructor. Rather than presenting death as a final state, the piece draws attention to the aesthetic and conceptual potential of what remains, emphasizing the gentle beauty found in decomposition, calcification, and physical residue.

Organic forms and textures are reimagined through synthetic materials such as gesso, modeling clay, plaster, and oil paint. This material juxtaposition highlights the contrast between the natural and the constructed. Continuing Clulow’s broader engagement with bodily remnant, shifting from earlier references like fingernails to skeletal elements, the work reflects on how discarded or overlooked parts can retain both symbolic and formal significance.
