Death’s Doors

Ink etched on paper

2024

A exploration on the concept of death, drawing literal inspiration from the phrase “on death's door.” Clulow aimed to depict the often ominous and inevitable progression of dying, emphasizing that we are born into a life dying. This progression is represented as a door slowly opening. Death’s Doors was inspired by Eadweard Muybridge, the 19th-century photographer known for capturing movement through stop-motion sequences. A heavy use of aquatint was used to create a stark contrast between the door and the void behind it, making the environment beyond the door as dark as possible. This darkness symbolizes the unknown and reflects the implications behind physical or metaphorical death.
